Brugge, Belgium is a historic port city of northwest Belgium. Brugge is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the North". At one time this beautiful city was "the chief commercial city" of the world. Having the fortune of visiting Brugge on two different occasions, I am drawn to the charm buildings that stand along the edges of the canals. Each has it's own texture, developed over the years by weather and time. I hope to capture the patina of the surface of the buildings with the medium of watercolor. I highly recommend a trip to this beautiful area of the world.

Siena,Italy is surrounded by wine yards and olive groves, is spread out over three hills in the center of Tuscany.Its picturesque houses and small streets wind up to the charming Piazza del Campo. Restaurant, Osteria Le Logge, formerly an old phamacia is the setting for this watercolor painting. Dining tables are set up outside the entry walls of the stone structure and sophisticated waiters and waitresses relay the fare. The vision of a delectable dessert is embedding in my memory; a puff pastry with whipped cream and custard! Somehow, food never tastes as good indoors as it does in the open air, don't you agree!!

Italialn Watercolor Landscape Painting "Dining In Calcatta" by Georgia Artist Deanna Jaugstetter

Calcatta, Italy, is little known to most tourists as an ancient town built on volcanic cliffs in the 1500's. Calcatta was once condemned by the Italian government in the 1930's but is now considered as one of the grooviest towns in the area surrounding Rome. After being told that Calcatta existed, my husband and 4 friends hired a driver out of Rome, Italy to drive us to this jewel of a place high above the trees! To the delight of our ears, as we entered the town through a stairway of masonry of stone, we heard "Ave Maria", being sung by an Italian gentleman in the tiny church there! Dining in Calcatta ,a watercolor, is a glimpse of such a fascinating place!

Having had a cow named Bessie as a child whose milk I drank at almost every meal was true country living! Milk and Cornbread was a staple at my dinner table in beautiful Western North Carolina!  As I painted this floral oil painting in my studio, the light coming from the window stayed consistent until the end. Often, a light source will change dramatically, challenging the artist in that he must remember the initial inspiration for the painting. For me, so often it is the way light falls across the subject matter! Such is the joy and challenge of painting from life. Hydrangea is a southern flowering bush that brings me great joy in my garden from mid spring through late June!

Fifty or so members of this highly recognized group gathered to paint on location of Whistlestop Cafe in Juliette, Georgia. This famous cafe is where most of the scenes from the widely viewed movie,"Fried Green Tomatoes" was filmed. I still remember the scene in the field with Izzy and the bees! " Juliette" is an architectural/landscape painting of what was once the courthouse! What intrigued me were the shadows that fell across the buildings in the early morning sun!

A friend of mine has taken such care with his cherished vintage truck! "Washed and Waxed" is an original landscape oil painting on a canvas panel. While visiting my friend's property, I photographed one of these prized trucks and fell in love with the bright red, highly polished beauty. I always wanted a bright red truck to ride around in so getting to paint one is the next best thing!

"Summer Serenity", a landscape oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas, is inspired by smaller paintings done "en plein air" in the north Georgia mountains. There are beautiful lakes in the north Georgia area, all within 3 hours drive from Atlanta, Ga. Outdoor camping was a summer and fall activity for me as a young girl living in the mountains of North Carolina. We encountered all sorts of critters, as my Dad called them, on these camping excursions. I believe those trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains allowed me to catalogue all those beautiful images of woods and lakes for my paintings!

 Walking through the modern city of Rome,Italy, one will come across these monumental arched structures that often cross streets and avenues. Sometimes these arches are doubled and often ornately decorated.The aqueducts were and are a means of carrying water to and from the city to its residents and commercial sites. I am reminded that Americans often choose to tear down to build up, losing historic architectural treasures. For most preservation of history is the appeal of European travel! Painting in watercolor my interpretation of this marvelous feat of engineering, Ancient Aqueduct is my way of preserving history, my history, and your history as well!

What a cutie is this plump little bird with the most beautiful blue/slate gray/white feathers! "Sweet Tweet 5" , a small wildlife watercolor painting is painted from the photo I took from my kitchen window, my favorite viewing spot for my little flighty friends! I suppose all the unseasonably rainy more temperate summer days this year brought him to the wooded area of my southern garden!

Graphite Study for "Classic "

For many years one of the classic shoe styles for little boys has been the traditional lace up saddle oxfords! They are made to last and have stories to tell about their precious owners! This pencil study was done from a still life set up in my art studio. I love the water soluble graphite pencils to give me the light, medium, and dark values for the final painting! Here, I have laid the groundwork for the small oil painting on canvas which shall be titled, "Classic"! Be sure to check back to see the completed work!
